Kirin are thought to be a creature that have the ability to sense the right and wrong. In Buddhist-inspired interpretations, it is said that Kirin will not walk through grass out of fear of harming a single blade, and thus they are often depicted as walking on clouds, on water, or walking through the air. Kirin are thought of as a symbol of protection, good omens, justice, and wisdom; it is said that the appearance of a Kirin foretells the arrival or death of a sage or a great leader.
