A Spark is a plot device within Feral. Every avatar both has and is a Spark[1], as do various Non-Player Characters within the game. A Spark represents an avatar's soul, and can change to resemble multiple different forms, such as the avatar species available to players. Creatures with a Spark are otherworldly entities, and are not native to the planet of Feral.[2]

Creatures with Sparks (who can also be referred to as 'a Spark' themselves) are otherworldly beings believed to have come from the shards of a long-lost star, who are able to live forever so long as they keep their passion alight. They are beings of imagination, harnessing powerful kinetic energy in order to shapeshift into various different forms.[2][3] Some Sparks, such as Andrulian Fawnlynn, keep their last name from their previous home in honor of it.[4] Creatures without Sparks are born on the planet of Feral[2], but are able to recognize Sparks. For players, the Spark is visible as a gem on the avatar's forehead, which can be customized by the player with color and decals.
The Spark is the essence of a creature, representing their soul and being able to take different forms. Within Feral, the avatar Spark is capable of taking on the form of various creatures, which have their own creeds and philosophies, implying that a Spark's chosen form corresponds to their personality and beliefs. When a player unlocks a new avatar species, such as the Dragon, they are told that "The form of the avatar is now your own."[5] Sparks are drawn to the core energy of Planet Feral[2], though it is unclear why. It is unknown what forms Sparks, or for what purpose.[6] Sparks are capable of performing kinds of magic such as levitation, through the use of items that can channel magical power.[7]
